Mishpatim

מִשְׁפָּטִים

Summary of the Parshah

Civil and religious laws — damages, loans, justice and care for the vulnerable — and the three pilgrimage festivals.

📖 Studying the Parshah

Immediately after the Ten Commandments, Parshat Mishpatim presents a wide collection of civil and religious laws that form the basis of the Jewish legal system. It contains 53 of the Torah's 613 commandments.

The civil laws include rules on servitude (stressing the dignity of the servant and his obligatory release), on homicide, bodily injury, liability for damaged property, loans and deposits, and property.

The religious laws include the three pilgrimage festivals (Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot), the prohibition of cooking a kid in its mother's milk (the source of separating meat and dairy), and many laws of social justice and care for the most vulnerable.
