Pesach (פֶּסַח) is the festival of freedom. It commemorates the liberation of the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt more than 3,300 years ago.
For eight days (from the 15th to the 22nd of Nisan) we refrain from eating or owning chametz: leavened bread and any product of the five grains that has fermented. Instead we eat matzah, the unleavened bread that recalls the haste with which our ancestors left Egypt.
The heart of Pesach is the Seder, the ceremonial meal of the first two nights. Following the Haggadah, we tell the story of the Exodus, eat the symbolic foods (maror, charoset, karpas, zeroa and beitzah), drink four cups of wine and sing the psalms of Hallel.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that Pesach is not only a historical commemoration but a personal experience of liberation. Every year we must feel as if we ourselves had left Egypt — freeing ourselves from our own limitations and personal forms of bondage.

"In every generation, each person must see themselves as if they personally had left Egypt. Pesach is not just history — it is your own story of liberation."
— The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson
