The start of the fast (19:44) and its end (20:40) are the times published by Chabad.org for Valencia; candle lighting is brought forward to 19:40 as set by Beit Chabad Valencia. The rest are halachic times calculated for Valencia (39.47° N, 0.38° W). Yom Kippur lasts a single day worldwide.

Yom Kippur (יוֹם כִּפּוּר) is the holiest day of the Jewish calendar: the day of forgiveness, atonement and reconciliation with G-d.

For about 25 hours, from before sunset until nightfall the following day, we observe a complete fast — no eating or drinking — and devote ourselves entirely to prayer and teshuvah.

The five prayers of Yom Kippur:

  1. Kol Nidrei: the eve of Yom Kippur, the annulment of vows
  2. Shacharit: the morning prayer
  3. Musaf: includes the Avodah, the service of the High Priest in the Temple
  4. Mincha: the reading of the Book of Jonah
  5. Neilah: the closing of the heavenly gates, the most intense moment

The day concludes with a long shofar blast (tekiah gedolah) marking the end of the fast and the sealing of the divine judgment.

The Rebbe taught that Yom Kippur reveals the essence of the Jewish soul: an inner point that never sinned and is always connected to G-d. The teshuvah of Yom Kippur reaches that essential point.

✡️

“On Yom Kippur, every Jew — regardless of everything — is a High Priest entering the Holy of Holies. On this day your soul is completely pure.”

— The Lubavitcher Rebbe
