Rosh Hashanah (רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה) is the Jewish New Year, the day on which G-d created Adam and Eve. It begins the Ten Days of Teshuvah that culminate in Yom Kippur.
Over two days of intense prayer we crown G-d as King of the universe and ask to be inscribed in the Book of Life for the coming year.
The Rebbe emphasized that the shofar is the sound that awakens the Jewish soul from its spiritual slumber — the primal cry of the soul calling out to G-d.
“The sound of the shofar is the cry of the awakening Jewish soul. No matter how far you have been — on Rosh Hashanah, the King calls you by your name.”
— The Lubavitcher Rebbe
